I've seen a string of movies related to individuals combatting impersonal and even inimical institutions and customs. Woman in Gold (see earlier post) and then Philomena. And I have the Monuments Men recorded.
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely." — John Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton
All the abuses rely on people acting like sheep. They go where they are herded, leaving behind their reason and their will. This is why ignorance is so frightening and we should all be working to both inform and encourage critical thinking. This is also why we have civilizations falling into chaos. If you encourage citizens to follow along wherever authority directs, then eventually they'll be directed to act against their own interests in pursuit of some authority's goals. Hitler and the Catholic church have both proven what happens then … horror and repeated abuse.
